Acne drugs

Acne drugs are effective in treating acne by first killing the skin bacteria and enhancing the skill cell turnover and also sloughing of dead skin cells which were clogging the skin pores. These drugs need to be prescribed by the dermatologist who either gives oral prescription or a medicine which needs to be applied on the acne affected skin. Following are the popular drugs for acne treatment:
- Topical application There are a section of drugs which need to be applied as creams or pimple gels that dry up the skin and kill the skin bacteria which is causing the acne. Over-the-counter pimple lotions are effective in cases of mild acne and treat the acne to a large extent. These acne medicines actually contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide which kill the skin bacteria and also dry up the acne. Acne blemishes are also healed to a large extent by these pimple creams.
- Antibiotics In cases of moderate to severe acne, doctors generally prescribe a set of antibiotics that clean the system of the skin bacteria which is causing the acne problem to aggravate. These antibiotics are either prescribed orally or asked to be applied on the skin.
- Isotretinoins In severe cystic acne cases, drugs such as Accutane are prescribed by doctors. However, this acne medication is extremely powerful and there is a strong research blaming it for causing inflammatory bowel movement. Pregnant women are also forbidden to use this acne drug. In fact, this acne treatment must be carried out only under the strict guidance of a good dermatologist.
- Oral contraceptives In certain women, oral birth pills are known to control acne out-breaks as the levels of hormones are controlled as a result of them .Oral contraceptive pills are known to cause side-effects and hence, must be used as acne treatment only under the guidance of a good doctor.
Acne drugs and acne medicines must be taken as means of acne treatment only if they have been prescribed by a reputed dermatologist. These drugs may have associated side-effects and thus, should be used with caution. The positive effect of these drugs may take some weeks or so and the patient may find his/her condition worsening for some time. But if the medication is continued with patience and under doctor guidance, it is known to bring about good results.
