Acne occurrence on face, chest and back is one of the most widespread and popular skin infection that bothers more than 90% of people in the ages of 15-25 years, especially. Since, it is such a global problem, newer techniques are being employed to treat acne and also mitigate the scars left by them. The latest offering of science is acne laser treatment. Scientists have come up with ways so that lasers can cure acne. But to a lay man the question remains about its efficacy.

Acne and laser treatment

Laser beams are made to project a yellow light which kills the bacteria on the skin which causes inflammation of the acne.  Apart from this, the laser beam also destroys the sebaceous glands on the skin, which produce excess amounts of sebum that were in turn clogging the skin pores. The light from the laser gun also stimulates formation of collagen in the skin which helps in reducing the acne scars. Laser treatment of acne is still in its early stages and the long-term impacts of this procedure are yet to unfold. Hence, such a treatment should be applied with caution.

Getting rid of acne with laser

  • Laser treatment of acne is an effective means to clear up the face and back also.
  • There are minor side-effects of acne laser treatment. This includes slight swelling, redness etc which would soon disappear
  • Earlier CO2 laser beams were used to clear up the skin affected by acne. But this technique had certain side effects such as the healing period was prolonged and the treated area had white patches etc. Now-a-days, non-destructive laser beams are used which do not remove the top skin layers. One of the most popular acne laser treatments is through pulsed dye laser. It takes a week to recover from laser treatment and collagen remodeling would be done for the next 3 months.

Acne scar laser treatment

Laser treatment is also given to get rid of the scars left behind by acne. Diode laser techniques are used to destroy the sebaceous glands of the skin pores. They are painful and are coupled with analgesics. The treatment with laser is however, expensive.

Doctors may apply local analgesic cream on the skin which is undergoing laser therapy.

In 99% cases, laser treatment is known to help people clear up the skin and reduce the attack of acne.

The initial stages of acne can however, be treated by application of pimple care creams which not only prevent acne outbreak but also reduce acne scars.
