Acne is a very common skin condition that affects more than 90% of the people in the ages between 15-25 years. Adult acne is also a common occurrence that not only disfigures the face of the person having acne outbreak but also lowers the self esteem of the person. The most affective practice is to use benzoyl peroxide for acne.

Treating acne with Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide has been found to kill the acne causing bacteria and even dry out the pimples. It is used in most of the acne creams and pimple gels, even body washes. The base used for such products could be herbal, but benzyl peroxide content is in 5-10% concentration. It is effective in reducing the swelling, size and associated pus as well as pain from the pimple on the skin.

Following are some of the salient features associated with benzoyl peroxide:

  • It comprises of two parts: benzoyl and peroxide. It has strong bleaching properties.
  • It can be used as an effective antiseptic, because it considerably reduces the bacterial population on the clogged skin pores and also has the ability to kill the yeast on the surface of the skin. Thus, it is capable of reducing the inflammation on the skin.
  • Its presence in creams and gels make it very effective in drying up the acne and reducing the infection. Some people may be allergic to it and are advised to use lesser concentration (2.5% concentration) of it in the cream.
  • Excessive application of benzoyl peroxide is to be avoided as it may cause skin drying and even peeling of the skin.
  • Dermatologists often recommend a follow-up with an oil-free moisturizer application on the skin to retain the moisture level of the skin. One can also use oil-free sun block to reduce the effect of sun light on the skin.
  • Face packs and creams that contain benzoyl peroxide must be sparingly applied on the skin initially. If the skin is not allergic to it, then the application can be more liberal and generous. If a person is allergic to it, then it is advisable to stop using that cream.
  • Side-effects of benzoyl peroxide for treating pimples include: peeling of the skin, drying of the skin, redness, slight itching etc. Dryness and peeling of the skin can combated with application of oil free moisturizer.
