Acne is one of the most common skin condition which affects a vast segment of population, and that too in all ages. Earlier it was assumed that acne affects teenagers at the height of puberty. Today we know that it is not true. In fact more and more people from their 20s, 30s, 40s ages are seeking over the counter acne treatment.

Fighting acne with OTC products

  • The most effective means to combat acne is to dry them up on the skin. Certain products such as benzoyl peroxides, salicylic acids, sulfur etc are known to effectively dry up the zits and heal the pimples.
  • The most popular acne creams which are easily available in chemist shops are: ProActiv, Accutane, Acnezine, Erytop etc.
  • Though these OTC creams and gels do not require a doctor’s prescription, yet it is advisable to seek the advice of a dermatologist for acne treatment, before application of these creams. A dermatologist would understand the severity of the problem and also advise a course of antibiotic treatment to perhaps solve the problem.

OTC remedies for pimples

·        Now-a-days, the market is flooded with acne gels and acne body washes that give medicated cleansing to the acne-affected skin. However, one most not indulge in excessive washing of the face and body with the soap. This practice may dry up the skin unnecessarily which would stimulate the body to produce more sebum!

·        Do not apply OTC acne creams repeatedly on the acne-prone or affected skin, as this would also dry the skin away. This might lead to new acne break-outs.

·        Generally OTC acne creams should be followed by application of oil-free moisturizers as the skin gets dried up due to such application.

·        There are several OTC skin toners also available in the market that helps in tightening up the skin pores. These toners may also dry up the skin. It is advisable to follow it up with oil-free moisturizers.

·        Certain acne face packs and mud packs are known to be effective in controlling acne and treating the scars. These OTC acne products can be applied twice a week.
