Pimples or break-outs or simply acne are perhaps the most irritating skin problems that effect 90% of people especially in the age groups of 15-25.  There is hardly a person who has not gotten acne or pimples in his/her life.

Why do we get pimples at all?

We get pimples when the pores of our skin get clogged by sebum, dead cells and bacterial infection sets in. As soon as a skin pore gets inflamed, the area appears swollen, pink in color and is tender and painful to touch.  This is what we call as a pimple or acne.

Why do I get a “pus head” on my pimple?

The inflamed pimple now has millions of white blood cells fighting away the bacteria that had caused the infection. As a result, the dead cells begin to accumulate at the tip of the pimple which gives its “pus head”.

Is popping pimples a wise thing to do?

Many people find the pimples with their pus heads and yellow tips “gory”. They are constantly picking them up. They try to squeeze the pimples which is not at all a wise thing to do, unless one is keen to have scars on the face. Popping pimples is a common habit because the eruption on the face constantly despairs a person and the tickling, itching and sometimes painful feeling keeps nagging a person to do something! Hence, youngsters love squeezing the pimples. If the pimple is in papule stage where it is swollen and tender, then it should not be touched at all.

Why do pimples bleed?

Forcing the contents of such a pimple would cause bleeding from the clogged pore and spread the debris of sebum, dead cells and bacteria onto the skin. This is highly unwise because more scabs would form on the “wound” and that would leave a scar on the face.

If the pustule or “pus head” pimple is squeezed, then one would find the dead debris in the form of yellow material oozing out of the pimple. If one tries to force further material out of the inflamed pimple, blood would start to gush out. Slowly a scab would form to let the wound heal. The scab is also likely to leave scars on the face.

What should I do when my pimples bleed?

One should avoid touching one’s face to avoid pimples from spreading infection to other parts of the face. The technique of wiping the face is through gentle dabbing of the face with a clean washcloth. However, if a pimple is found bleeding due to accidental rubbing, one must put a gentle pressure to stop its bleeding. It is then advisable to wash the face, wipe gently and apply an acne cream to avoid more acne and pimples. Even scars can be reduced through topical application of these creams.
